Things I have learned today:
- Even when not in doubt, always ask the librarian. S/he knows things that you didn't even think to ask about. Today I went to the music library for a certain book on CDs. When checking it out, I said I didn't think it had what I was really looking for, which was info about preservation of CDs, and she said "oh we have a website about that..." and showed it to me. I also got shown some CDs they had with bronzing or CD rot. If you're interested, the page is http://www.lib.washington.edu/music/preservation.html. It's pretty interesting, but anyway, my point was that if I hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have known.
- Never say anything on a website that you wouldn't want someone else to see. I generally make it a policy, on my blog or elseweb, not to say anything mean about anyone, even if I'm 99% certain that person will never see it. But the other day I said something almost-mean about someone, and sure enough, she read it. She teased me about it today, which is how I know she read it. She's not upset or anything, but it is a reminder that if it's public, people will read it.
- This isn't a lesson, but I really don't like branch/department libraries. It seems like I always have to trek to every corner of campus for any research project.
