Cyber-Begging

Sat, 1 Feb 2003

Aquarion posted an article a few days ago about people who set up websites asking for money. I generally share his sceptical attitude towards people who pull that kind of stunt. I'm not all that sympathetic towards people who rack up uncontrollable debt, just want to get laid, or are saving for breast implants, though I am sympathetic towards the guy who got run over by a taxi. (I am slightly perturbed by his refusal to sue the taxi and insurance companies for the damages they owe him; they're not going to cough up anything until they're forced to comply. I understand that he doesn't want to contribute to the everybody-suing-everyone culture, but come on, this is not a cup of coffee, and he's really just asking for his medical bills to be paid.)

Today another site came to my attention. It's not really like the others above, although it does ask for help. This guy is homeless in LA and has set up a website about his life as a homeless person. He does ask for contributions (from those who can afford it), since he would be kind of crazy not to, but he primarily asks for job leads, and he says he constantly applies for jobs. Mostly the site is about his life, where he lives (his car), where he bathes (sponge baths in Starbucks), the necessity of appearing "normal" to everyone else, especially when applying for jobs. It was really enlightening for me to read about what it's actually like to be homeless. I am very conscious that my parents are the only thing in this world that is keeping me warm, dry, and fed.

You're right. About the only thing that's keeping me safe is my parents. I have a site about cyberbegging. It's interesting. It give you a view into human nature and also how the internet is evolving. I'm mentally disabled but I try to help people through my website. I'm not interested to much in money. Cyberbeggars do NOT get rich. It's not a get quick rich scheme. I'm interested in trying to make cyberfriends. On my site, I try to offer resources about making websites. If someone can't make a site they can put their snail mail on my "Need Help" page. http://www.cyberbeggar.biz

Okay, look, people... My post criticizes cyber-begging. Why are you piggybacking off of it to advertise your begging sites? Sheesh. My comments are there for discussion, not link-spamming.

So I'm disabling comments on this entry. Sorry if anyone else wants to say something intelligent, but your chance has been ruined by previous idiots.

To whom it may concern:

I am considering putting up a website to cyberbeg for myself.
The reason is that I was born physically handicapped / disabled, and have a terrible time trying to obtain any kind of employment, due to discrimination.
I do not receive SSI or SSDI, from the US government because they refuse to give it to me. Even with the help of a lawyer, I have been turned down.
I have tried the Department of Vocation Rehabilitation, but I have also been discriminated there, as well; and have been denied services because I do not have a college degree.
Thus, I am not considered to be a "qualified handicapped applicant" to receive services from them.
I was never allowed into the armed forces.
I am not allowed to have the opportunity to work in a civil service job position of the US government, because I am not a vetern who can get more automatic points added onto my test score.
I have been forced many times to live off of welfare out of nessessity. (Currently, I am not on state welfare.)
I do not smoke, drink, or do any illegal drugs of any kind.
At this time, I am living in a tent in the woods in the State of Maryland with another woman, who was also born physically handicapped.
I beleive that begging is ethical, moral, and right, providing (as in both of our cases) that we use the money we receive from street begging everyday to meet our daily needs, such as laundry, showers, female products, shoes or rain gear, food, etc., until we can both get back on our feet, again.
Neither I nor my female friend, use the money we receive from street begging for any illegal use(s).
In fact, both of use are trying to save up right now to buy two used cars, so we can move around (on our own) and improve our lives. In my case, I need a car, so I can look for, and go back to work, again.
I have seriously thought about writing a small rule and eithics book for all beggers to live by, a declaration of rights and responsiblities, and I am even thinking about trying to get congress to pass a beggers law to legalize begging here in the United States.
I don't beleive that those who are drug addicts, or alchoholics should ever be allowed to beg, since they abuse the beggers system, and because they give the rest of us who are really in need (like me and my physically handicapped female friend) a bad name and reputation.
I beleive that only those of us who live well below the US proverty level within each of our states, are physically handicapped, (and/or are elderly), are not drug addicts or alchoholics, are not on SSI or SSDI, or on welfare, and are jobless, should have the right to beg.
Sincerely,
Anne.
