Non-Anti-VDay

Fri, 14 Feb 2003

Yeah, it's the 14th of February, otherwise known as Valentine's Day. I've always had a kind of resistance towards Valentine's Day; I enjoyed it in elementary school, more or less, since everyone gave everyone else valentines, and no one was left out. Since then I've always felt like the odd one out of a soppy holiday. Of course I tell myself that I'm just refraining, but it's easier to believe that when I have a SO to refrain with. Last year he gave me O'Reilly's Perl CD Bookshelf; this year we're not sending each other anything. I'm not anti-v-day, because I don't object to showing affection. I just object to spending money to do it and to feeling obligated to do it on this one particular day, to the detriment of the other 364.

I'm not sure I know anyone who's giving or getting any of the stereotypical VDay stuff, other than maybe a small box of chocolate or whatever. There's so much hype over this one day, geared towards making people feel like they have to buy a lot of expensive stuff to prove their love. It makes me sick.

Speaking of feeling sick, you will too when you look at Aquarionics today. I've got a better color scheme on my library-student site.
