So, I've been thinking about where I want to go with this spiffy MLIS degree once I get it. Of course a job in the corporate sphere, with a title like Information Technology Specialist,
would get me more money, but I identify more with the title of Librarian.
As long as I can send my children to college and afford a few reasonable luxuries, I don't mind. I would rather do a job I feel is worth my time and effort than one that simply gets me money.
I've been thinking, the past few days, about the Peace Corps. I feel it would be a great way to see another part of the world and to be of service. I also feel that my librarianship skills would be extremely useful in a third-world country... but when I emailed a recruiter, he said that I'd probably get assigned to teach English and would have only minimal library-project duties. I am not very interested in teaching English. Yes, it's necessary and worthwhile, but I don't want to do it. So probably no Peace Corps for me.
On a tangent, while talking to my father about the Peace Corps I learned that he had also considered the Peace Corps after graduation from CalTech. Had he gone, he would have been assigned to teach chemistry in the Philippines. This makes sense for him, because he was a chemist, and he knew he wanted to teach. I, on the other hand, have no desire to teach in a classroom.
My inclinations are definitely taking on an international bent. I don't know exactly what I want to end up doing, but I want it to be useful, preferably international, and to take full advantage of the skills I am currently aquiring at the expense of so much time and money.
