Dumb progress

Mon, 24 Mar 2003

There is a family story in which my parents and my brother (about 5 I think, and definitely before I was born) were sailing in a stiff wind that just touched up white caps on the waves. My parents fought against the wind to make it back to the dock, and my brother clung to the mast. Just as my father said, We're making progress! a big wave hit the boat and drenched Ralph, who complained, not unreasonably, This is dumb progress.

That's how I feel with my cold or flu or whatever it is. I feel that I must be getting nearer the end, but it's still not at all pleasant. My fever, I think, is gone, and my nose is not running as fast as it was before. In fact, I think it may be stopping today. My throat is not as sore as it used to be, either. Unfortunately, I woke up this morning with dry nasal passages, a horrible feeling of mucus in my chest, and an intense desire to cough. Luckily, boiling water and soaking my head in the steam soothed my sinuses and my windpipe and started the mucus flowing again, so that when I eventually coughed, I could actually hack stuff up rather than coughing ineffectually and painfully. Still, I think I would rather not have to cough at all.

Unfortunately there are things I need to do today, or else I would take advantage of my continuing illness to relax more. I truly haven't done any work since last Wednesday, and I haven't left the house since Friday. I'm grateful that my body has decided to take this opportunity to get sick, rather than some time in the middle of the quarter, when I would have less leisure to do nothing. Today I will work, but this morning I will take a bath, relax, read and let the steam ease my respiratory system.
