Gotta be yourself

When I sign on to AOHell these days, before minimizing it and going off to use a Real Browser, I take a look at what AOL/Time Warner's idea of news is. These days it's Iraq and the Oscars. (What a surprise.) I scanned through some photos of stars in wacky clothes, and I noticed a couple of things. Firstly, my idea of what looks good and what looks bad evidently differs greatly from whoever was doing the commentary. Secondly, Björk keeps getting flak from her swan outfit from 2001. Every time something weird comes up, someone says At least it's not as bad as Björk or something equally witty.

Now, I must admit the swan isn't really my thing either, but you gotta admit that Björk is one of the coolest kids around. It's so obvious to me that she wore the swan because she wanted to and it was fun, and everyone else is just jealous that she is confident enough to tell fashionists where to put it.

Björk has always done her own thing. Whether you like her music or not, you've got to admire that. About ten years ago now, Emily sent me a compilation tape with a few Björk songs from her album Debut (I think Human Behaviour, There's More To Life Than This, and Like Someone In Love). At one point I, in turn, showed them to my friend Tiana, who said they were weird, and she was right. But that weirdness is what makes Björk cool and unique. She does her own thing.
