(Nothing But) Cubicles

Wed, 23 Apr 2003

Yesterday was my first day on the job at the KCLS Service Center in Issaquah. It was a pretty good day overall but very tiring and somewhat surreal as well. The farewell Have a good day at work in the morning and my own little cubicle, with a computer and a phone, made me feel very odd, like I had woken up that morning in Dilbert. For the first time in my life, I'm going to have a work phone! I've been cubicle-ized!

I got a tour of the building and was introduced to millions of people, none of whose names I will remember. I got a bright green badge which gives me access to the building and to many locked areas of the building, including the ITS area (where my cubicle is). I started learning how to use Dynix (the database system that stores holdings and user data for KCLS) and Recall (Dynix' query language). Oh, and I filled out mountains of paperwork.

Eventually my brain shut down, and Meg (Library Automation Administrator, my supervisor) said go home, so I did. I came home, called Jeff, ate some crackers and cheese, and took a nap which stretched into 11.5 hours. So much for getting work done last night! At least I feel lovely and refreshed.

Reflections

Last Thursday was the one-year anniversary of my first day of work at KCLS. I don't want to bore anyone...
