One of the really cool things about working at KCLS is that if I place books on hold, they're delivered directly to my desk. Of course there's some delay in actually getting them, because it takes them a couple of days to make their way to the Service Center and I'm only there a couple [...]

Explain this evil concept again?
A Guantanamo Bay death camp is in the works. I am living in Nazi Germany. What's so bad about allowing people a fair trial? For heaven's sake, can't we stop playing so holier-than-thou? American human rights violations are one of the best-kept secrets on this side of the Pond.

Says who?
In class discussion on Wednesday, when the Digital Reference Assignment was due, Michael Harkovitch mentioned one of the questions he had answered for the IPL, about the meaning of the word pimping, used by a certain person in a certain context. For him this question raised issues of authority, due both to the lack of [...]

Geology in action
I’ve just experienced my first earthquake, and I didn’t even know it. It felt just like the house kind of shrugged all of a sudden and quivered for a little bit, and I didn’t even realize what had happened until Mary asked me if I’d felt the earthquake. I thought Pete was doing something strange [...]

Plugin envy
On January 15, 2004, when this blog turns 1 year old, its birthday present will be this, or perhaps this. Of course I've posted far from every single day, so I'll have to combine it with this so it doesn't look silly, but oh, do I want that plugin! The ironic thing is, I've been blogging [...]

Google vs. the IPL
Today I turned in my Digital Reference Assignment for LIS 521. The meat of this assignment was answering nine questions for the Internet Public Library. In the course of writing up my little report of my IPL experience, I started thinking about Google Answers and how different it is from the IPL, even though they [...]

McCafferty, Sloppy Firsts
A few weeks ago, when I shadowed Mike at the Issaquah reference desk, I was introduced to quite a few YA books that I wanted to read, including one by Megan McCafferty called Sloppy Firsts. It covers a year in the life of a sixteen-year-old girl named Jessica who is perfectly normal, especially in the [...]

Getting too old for this
The three-day weekend was fun. I spent lots of time with Jeff, including visiting his family Sunday afternoon, which was lovely. I enjoy spending time with Jeff's mother, even if she is a bit too honest sometimes. Monday Jeff and I went to hurling practice, and I made a lot of progress. I'm getting better with [...]

The best kind of treasure hunt
Last Wednesday we had a final-exam prep in 521. It was the first time since elementary school that I'd had a treasure hunt in class. Joe handed us cards with questions on them, and we had to go find the answer (in print, not on the web, though we were allowed to use the catalog). [...]

Telling it like it is
Some things are too weird to blog, but let's just say it's official (as official as it can possibly be!) that Jeff's mother likes me. And I like her too. Which is very nice, because life would be uncomfortable if we didn't.
