Librarians are cool

Coming eventually to a television near you: The Librarian, a new action movie planned by TNT.

Librarian centers on a cache of mythical objects secreted beneath the New York Public Library, including the Golden Fleece and the Ark of the Covenant. The title character must guard them against the forces of evil.

Too bad it's not about the thrilling adventure of a reference interview, but I guess we should take battles between good and evil where we can find them.

On a slightly more mundane note, yesterday I had occasion to help Jeff with an information quest. We ended up searching for a couple of hours, mostly using OCLC Worldcat, about which Jeff had not previously known. He was quite impressed with my searching and turning up books, which made me feel really chuffed about my own skills. I tend to forget how much we librarians differ from Normal People, but at least in this instance, I think that the difference between me and Jeff (other than the fact that I knew about OCLC) was that I had more ideas about tactics and entry points for searches. If you keep saying Wait, let's try one more thing, the odds are that eventually you'll find something. I am grateful for Jeff's patience in waiting while I tried one thing after another.

Alyssa was right when she said yesterday that tricky information searches are like crack for reference librarians.
