The best kind of treasure hunt

Tue, 27 May 2003

Last Wednesday we had a final-exam prep in 521. It was the first time since elementary school that I'd had a treasure hunt in class. Joe handed us cards with questions on them, and we had to go find the answer (in print, not on the web, though we were allowed to use the catalog). I found a medieval representation of hell, the number of nuns in Guam (125 as of last year), Sadako Ogata's address and whether she has any honorary degress (she has two), and the original person who said Northern blacks are Southern blacks. They just moved north (Andrew Young). I failed to find the definition of a Morton's neuroma, though it should have been where I looked. Maybe these random bits of knowledge will come in handy eventually. Probably not, but it's cool to know where to find them anyway. Being a librarian is fun.

Another assignment for this same class is due tomorrow morning. We were supposed to answer nine questions for the Internet Public Library and then to write up a brief narrative about our experiences. I don't know how long brief means, but the last time I asked this prof how long an assignment should be, he said, As long as it needs to be but no longer. Thanks, Joe. That helps so much.

I really shouldn't be procrastinating on this paper. It's not going to be very long, and I pretty much know what I'm going to say. I'm just tired and would rather relax at the end of a long day. Besides, I'm wearing black, so Horace is being overly affectionate and rubbing himself all over me, in order to achieve the greatest-possible hair coverage. I'd much rather pet the cat than work.
