Brotherly love

Fri, 1 Aug 2003

This week my brother Ralph and his wife Lori visited Seattle. They weren't staying with me (indeed, I had nowhere to put them!) but with friends of theirs. That caused both relief and sadness for me, because I would have liked to spend more time with them. I see them little enough as it is.

Jeff and I had planned to cook pizza for them, but scheduling became more complicated than we had anticipated. Tuesday and Thursday I would be getting home late from work; Wednesday and Thursday evenings Jeff was busy; Friday Ralph and Lori were going hiking at Mount Rainier. In the end Ralph and Lori took us out to dinner at Kabul, a nice Afghan restaurant in Wallingford, since there was no time to cook and Jeff and I are both poor starving students.

The food was really lovely. It was more expensive than Jeff or I could have afforded on a normal budget, but the prices were not unreasonably high. Jeff had ashak, a delicious pasta dish, and the rest of us had kebabs. Ralph and I shared a two-person combination platter with chicken and beef kebabs. It came with rice, bread (long flat strips), minty fruit salad, and possibly the most exquisite eggplant I have ever had.

Yesterday evening Ralph and Lori's hosts invited me to have dinner with them at their home and to go to Seattle Center with them afterwards. I went directly there from work and very much enjoyed the people and the meal (steak, roasted asparagus, fruit salad, and fresh bread). Unfortunately, I felt I had to pass on the Seattle Center outing, because I had a lot to do today and needed sleep. As always, I wish there were more time to spend with my brother, but at least I will see him and Lori at our cousin's wedding in a couple of weeks.
