Nose in the air

I regret to admit that I have become a food snob. It was not my intention, but it happened anyway. My snobbery was revealed to me last Monday when I went to lunch with Al at Chili's, and I had pasta.

Now, you might say that I shouldn't have pasta at a Tex-Mex restaurant, but Chili's isn't really even Tex-Mex. It's a chain restaurant that only mildly has a specialty. So I had the pasta with tomato-based sauce and chicken. It wasn't bad, but the sauce didn't have much flavor other than some red pepper flakes thrown in, and the chicken was standard chunks of grilled chicken that didn't match the dish at all. I was disappointed, almost more at myself than at the food. If only I hadn't started cooking so much, I would have enjoyed my pasta and chicken perfectly well.

That night, my parents and I went to the Celebration, another one of our favorite restaurants. I ordered chicken fried steak and discovered, to my great disappointment, that mine is miles better. I complained of this to my mother, who suggested that I choose one dish that I never cook, just so that I can order it in restaurants and avoid comparing it to my own cooking. I don't yet know what I will choose, but I think it's a good idea. If I'm paying for restaurant food, I want to enjoy it.
