You know, I really tried to think of a title that was funnier than this newspaper headline, but it just doesn't exist. The whole thing would be funny if it weren't so ridiculously tragic. News coverage abounds:
- Washington Post, Almanacs May Be Tool For Terrorists, FBI Says:
The idea of using it for terrorism never even occurred to me,
[Kevin Seabrooke, the senior editor of the World Almanac] said. They certainly didn't need the almanac to locate the twin towers.
- CNN, FBI urges police to watch for people carrying almanacs:
The publisher for The Old Farmers Almanac said Monday terrorists would probably find statistical reference books more useful than the collections of Americana in his famous publication of weather predictions and witticisms.
- Portsmouth Herald (Portsmouth, New Hampshire), FBI warning to watch out for almanacs is ludicrous:
Here we are, in
Orange-alert
status, and the best the FBI can do to help law enforcement hone in on suspected terrorist operatives is have them watch out for anyone with an almanac.
Obviously, it worries me that reference books are being singled out as signs of terrorist activity. It is completely ridiculous that an almanac could identify a potential terrorist. Is the DHS going to outlaw information-seeking altogether?
