Today I checked my niceperson.org email (I only do that every few days since I generally don't get anything but spam to those addresses) and found a couple of emails from a mysterious, anonymous individual. This isn't the Moron (for one thing, this guy has a bigger vocabulary), but he is quite secretive. I won't post his emails because I don't want to violate his privacy, but I'm curious about who it could be. Someone who knows my dad but doesn't know whether I'm related to Ralph and Lori Melton. Strange.
Whoever you are, feel free to come out of the woodwork. My curiosity has been piqued.
Jim says:
OK. I'm stepping into the open. I've sent niceperson a longer private email.
I knew -- and lost touch with -- your dad long before he was your dad. Shortly ago I thought I located him on the web, but checking to be sure it was he (note the good grammar)led me to your blog. You seem to live up to your name, so I decided to make your acquaintance. Knowing where/who you came from, I suspected you wouldn't mind my doing it the way I did. :)
Laurabelle says:
Well, I suppose I didn't exactly mind, but it was a bit weird and freaky. On the other hand, the 'Net's a wild place, and it's probably just as well to get the occasional reminder of how little I really know about who's reading this blog and what their motives might be. I know just a handful of people who read it (because they leave comments or send email or talk to me about it), but I get many more hits than those few worthy readers can account for. I should be more aware of my surroundings.
Funny enough, you're the first person ever to call me because of this site. I think of it as a descriptor, not a name. But that's another story, one that I think is better told in an entry than in a comment.
By the way, I think you should say what your relationship to my father was, because it's pretty awesome. (But I won't reveal it here if there are reasons that you want to keep it off the Web.)
Jim says:
Sure, I'll tell about me and your dad. We were classmates and roommates in college. We kept in touch for a few years, but then I lost track of him. (I am not a consistent correspondent.) My later attempts to re-locate him failed. Even periodic internet searches (once they existed) turned up nothing until late last month, when... bingo! When I saw you were partly responsible for his web site, I became curious about this other "Melton". Another search led me here, to a "niceperson" who seems to be a nice -- and interesting -- person.
Pleased to make your acquaintance. 8^)
