For administrative use only

Check this out: a webform with a text box labeled For administrative use only!

This is what Maurice Green would call manumation. Somebody doesn't quite get it.

I think I'm flattered. :)

And yeah... funniest. screenshot. ever.

(I suspect this was the intersection of a Pointy-Haired Boss with a subordinate who knew better but didn't care to try to clue-by-four the PHB.)

Laurabelle says:

The amazing thing is that it is now 2004, at an extremely technology- and especially Web-oriented university. You'd really think that people would be more aware.

Actually, I'm mildly surprised that I haven't ever seen this phenomenon before. I'd think that it would have been more common in the earlier days of the Web, but maybe not.

There were other problems with that whole Web interface. When I entered my credit card info, I could have chosen 2003, 2002, or even 2001 as a possible expiration date. That says to me that someone wrote this application in 2001, hard-coded those dates, and hasn't updated it since then. It also rules out the PHB scenario since a subordinate who knew better would have generated the drop-down menu automagically.

On the other hand, for a three-year-old application, the interface is not too bad. But security is dismal (if you know my name, my student number, and my birthdate, you can pretend to be me), and they really should be using the encrypted UWNetID authentication that the rest of the campus uses. (But before you get all excited about stealing my identity, all you can do with that interface is order convocation clothing. Big woop.)
