A few weeks ago when I ordered new wireless service, I also talked to someone at Qwest about standalone DSL. Some support muppet took my name and information and said that his manager would get back to me within 24 hours, which never happened. So Tuesday a week ago I called Blarg instead, and they [...]

On the (high) heels of success
I had a really good job interview yesterday at KCLS. The interview was for the reference librarian job pool, and although it consisted of two 45-minute interviews, it was pretty relaxed. I had really nice conversations with one of the associate directors and a branch manager, and I think I got across what I wanted [...]

Run-around some more
(Continuation of Run-around (the daisy)) Fast-forward to (last) Monday morning. Jeff's Sprint phone stopped working. This was okay, because we'd have the new phone activated, right? We called Qwest to do that and were told that we had to call back after 12:40 PM (mountain time). We called back again, activated the phone, and got told [...]

Play at work
This morning I was supposed to have a status review meeting with Kathy, but it turned out to be a surprise graduation party. It wasn't actually much of a surprise since she announced it on the ITS staff list, but I don't think the fête lost anything at all by the leak. There were lots [...]

Party!
The most exciting and important part of my graduation weekend was my family party on Saturday afternoon. I invited my parents, who were in town, and Jeff's whole family. I would have invited friends as well, but all of them were celebrating with their own parties! Still, we had eight people, including Jeff's younger brother, [...]

Gradjimacation
Yesterday evening was the iSchool Convocation ceremony. (It really bugs me that they call it convocation, because convocation is what happens at the beginning of the school year. On the other hand, it's not commencement either, because that's the official UW ceremony this afternoon.) It started at 7pm with a reception, and the ceremony itself [...]

Run-around (the daisy)
A few weeks ago I got a thing called an Uncalendar, which is a sort of calendar with no dates printed in (so you can start it at any time) and lots of space for scribbling. I didn't start using it right away, because I was still using my academic calendar, but last week was [...]

Dismal DSL
I just tested my DSL speed, and I got results ranging from 50K to 70K. Admittedly that test doesn't claim to be perfectly accurate, but that's pathetic. I'm supposed to be on high-speed internet here, folks.

Goldstein, Strange Devices of the Sun and Moon
I can't decide whether I like Lisa Goldstein's Strange Devices of the Sun and Moon. I certainly don't dislike it, but it hasn't really grabbed me the way that some others have. Still, I can't stop thinking about it, turning it over in my mind. Goldstein's urban fantasy novel is set in Elizabethan England, with historical [...]

Pasta mia
I made fresh pasta this afternoon, for the first time in my memory. I would say it’s the first time in my life, but Mom told me that I made pasta once when I was 4 or 5. It turned out okay; certainly it was passable for a first try. The dough was good and [...]
