The most exciting and important part of my graduation weekend was my family party on Saturday afternoon. I invited my parents, who were in town, and Jeff's whole family. I would have invited friends as well, but all of them were celebrating with their own parties! Still, we had eight people, including Jeff's younger brother, whom I had not expected to come but who came at the last minute. We ate hamburgers (from beef that I ground by hand), baked potato wedges, corn on the cob, and apple pie (made just that morning by Jeff and my father). It was lovely.
I spent most of the time in the kitchen, cooking, but my father sat out in the front room and kept everyone talking. It was my hope that people would mix and mingle and talk, and that was exactly what happened. Mom and Charlie got to talking about southern food, Jeff's mother and Pete geeked kitchen equipment, and my father talked to everyone.
I was surprised that it turned out so well, since I've had parties that completely flopped. Dad said the secret is to start with good people and good food, and we certainly had both of those in abundance.
