This afternoon I learned to spin on a drop spindle! I had expected to try it once and never again, but I found that it’s much easier than one would have expected. At least it’s fairly easy to make thread that will stay together; it’s somewhat harder to make thread of an even thickness, but that comes with practice. I came home with a bunch of wool, a makeshift spindle, and a head full of ideas of what to knit from my handspun wool.
First, I want a pair of wool combs and a better drop spindle, so I’ve asked Jeff to make me combs and Dad to make me a turned spindle. It’s lucky that spinning can be done with fairly primitive tools, because I haven’t got a lot of money to drop into it at the moment. But just wait until I start weaving…
Jeff says:
Actually, warp weighted looms aren't too bad (they're probably a little primitive for your period, Laura, but they work).
Constructing one yourself would probably only be a little more expensive than the shelving I just built.

You're not supposed to tell me that!
