This weekend Jeff and I went to a wonderful SCA event, A Celebration of Chivalry and Mostly Fibers Too. Basically it was fighting activities plus lots of fiber arts classes, which was great for both Jeff and myself. I spent all day Saturday learning to tat and spin and sew, and Jeff heralded for two knights in the ransom tourney. It was a fabulously busy day.
Sunday was much quieter than Saturday and actually a little bit of a disappointment, since there was supposed to be a knit-in
that morning, but no one showed up. So I sat at Herald's Point instead, sewed, and worked on a name and a device. My new draft SCA name is Laura Bellmaine,
which I like because it can be plausibly nicknamed to Laurabelle.
An extra bonus is that it comes from belles mains, beautiful hands
in French. I like the reference to hands because it evokes the power of my hands to create beautiful things.
I think discussion of my device will have to wait until I have a better graphical representation of it, because I don't expect any of my readers to speak Herald.
One of the reasons the event went so well for Jeff and me was that we were much more organized than we had been for previous events. A simple plastic bin made all the difference in holding all our random cooking and eating stuff that would otherwise have floated around and gotten in the way. The next luxury I want is a table!
Dorothea Salo says:
I speak herald, if somewhat haltingly. Comes from having a husband who used to be an SCA herald.
Laurabelle says:
Cool! (Small world...)
I'm still going to make Jeff create a mock-up for me before I start wibbling in public.
Senji says:
I also speak herald haltingly; but that comes from being an amateur polymath (hmm, that feels pretentious -- what I mean is that I dabble in lots of things :-) ) with a short attention-span...
