Fun with iptables

Tue, 16 Nov 2004

I played around with iptables the other week, trying to set up a basic firewall. I didn't get very far, and I didn't see any difference, at least not immediately.

A couple of days ago I tried to read usenet via my usual setup: slrn with a local news server (leafnode). Slrn couldn't connect to the server. This boggled me until I remembered that I'd completely shut off incoming packets. Duh.

I think I've fixed it now, so we'll see if it works. Good thing I didn't break anything that actually matters.
