Old friends

I didn't get to see my friend David when I went to Texas last month, but we had a nice long chat on the phone. (It was almost enough.) We don't manage to talk that often, so I was surprised when he called me up again yesterday to invite me to his wedding next December. I assured him that wild horses couldn't keep me away!

I also asked him if he and Kristin had any particular color scheme for their home, which completely threw him for a loop. (Some men understand those things, but not David.) He had no idea, so I said I'd think about what I wanted to make for them and ask again later. About two minutes after we hung up, he called me back and said, Our colors are cream and champagne!

David and I go way back. We met 10 years ago (geometry class, 9th grade) but didn't become friends until a year later (poetry project for English class, 10th grade). Actually, he told me later that he had been trying to make friends with me since the previous fall, but I blew him off. (I had no idea!) Lucky for me, he's persistent when he makes up his mind.

David wrote to me when I was in France. His were wonderful long letters, full of geekery about philosophy, biology, computers, and Soundgarden. I could hear his voice as if he were in the room with me. When the first letter arrived, I cried because I was so homesick, and it was so good to hear a familiar voice.

We went our own ways in college, but David is still one of my dearest friends. I look forward to meeting his fiancée, Kristin, and to continuing our friendship in the decades to come.
