My, how generous of you

I got an an email from American Airlines yesterday, asking me to donate my frequent-flyer miles to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, relocation efforts are ongoing and recovery is moving forward. But many of the people evacuated from their neighborhoods have urgent travel needs—to relocate, connect with family, and ultimately, return back home. Thousands were separated from their homes and loved ones by Hurricane Katrina, and American Airlines and the United Way have joined forces to assist them.

We've formed the Miles to Move Forward Program to help provide transportation to those affected by this terrible tragedy in the Gulf Coast region. American has already committed one million AAdvantage miles—miles that are already being put to good use—and now we're asking our AAdvantage members to get involved.

One million miles, eh? That sounds really impressive, until you realize that one round-trip ticket costs at least 25,000 miles. That means a maximum of 40 people can get free flights out of that deal. Now, maybe they're relaxing that a little, but American Airlines isn't providing any details about how they plan to administer this program.

As Jeff said, I will be impressed when you do something impressive.
