The checker might simply be wrong, or there might be an exception for parents with their own children. (I expect the problem case is a group of college-age kids where only one is over 21 and buying alcohol for a bunch of friends.) If you're concerned, you should check out the laws and regulations yourself rather than going by my second-hand report from a supermarket checker! I have no idea! I ask because most of my alcohol buying takes place during our grocery shop, on which the children accompany me.
